Earlier this month Capcom announced that it had decided to remaster the original Resident Evil game first released in 1996. This update on a classic will be re-released on modern hardware, including the Xbox 360, Xbox One, PS3, PS4, and PC.
Some may view it as a grab for cash, but the original game is now 18 years old, meaning there’s a lot of gamers out there who’ve never experienced Capcom’s survival horror. Now they can, and with a number of much needed enhancements.
The gameplay is going to be left alone for the most part except for a few tweaks and fixed camera angle changes (that were annoying). The big difference for Resident Evil 2015 will come in the graphics department. The 4:3 aspect ratio is being joined by a widescreen TV-friendly 16:9 version. The visuals will be 720p for Xbox 360 and PS3, and 1080p for everything else. The sound is also being enhanced for all platforms to 5.1 surround, which will certainly add something to the experience.

So how good will this game look when it is released next year? Capcom is keen to show us and has released a bunch of comparison screenshots, all of which you can see in the gallery above.
One thing to keep in mind is that, although the game clearly looks a lot better, these are early, static screenshots. There’s going to be a number of effects that add to the overall atmosphere alongside that surround sound and crisp 720p/1080p output.
It’s worth noting that the comparison here is being done with the Wii port of the original game, not the PlayStation version. But regardless of which version you are coming from, if you enjoyed a playthrough years ago this is going to be a tempting re-purchase. All we need now is a release date beyond “coming 2015.”
