Blizzard may be dragging its feet when it comes to considering a switch to free-to-play for World of Warcraft, but the developer has embraced microtransactions for the game. This is evident in the newly launched in-game shop.
This week Blizzard added a new Shop interface to World of Warcraft and stocked it full of pets and mounts to buy. Thankfully, the pricing isn’t anywhere near as bad as a game like Angry Birds Go!, but you are still going to have to spend some real-world cash if you see a pet or mount you like.
Pets typically cost $10, where as mounts are $25 each. But because the shop is new, Blizzard is running a 50% off sale, meaning pets are currently $5 and mounts $12.50. To access the shop just log into the game and look for the new Shop icon on the menu bar. Once purchased, your new friend will either appear instantly in your inventory or be sent to you via mail if your inventory is full.

Right now there are 9 pets, including Alterac Brew Pup, Blossoming Ancient, Cenarion Hatchling, Cinder Kitten, Lil’KT, Lil’Ragnaros, Lil’XT, Pandaren Monk, and the Soul of the Aspects. There’s also 6 mounts to purchase, including the Armored Bloodwing, Celestial Steed, Enchanted Fey Dragon, Heart of the Aspects, Swift Windsteed, and the Winged Guardian.
If you don’t or can’t use the in-game shop, you can always purchase them through the Battle.net Shop instead. But whichever method you use, this is sure to give Blizzard’s revenue from the game quite the boost, especially if they continue to add desirable items you can purchase in the coming months and keep running sales. The release of the Warlords of Draenor expansion at some point next year will also offer an opportunity to get new stock added to the shop.
If you’ve yet to play World of Warcraft, or some of its expansions, don’t forget Blizzard extended its Black Friday sale to January.
