World Cup 2014 is in full swing, and billions of people around the globe are pretty fired up about it. Even if your team has been eliminated there’s still plenty of action left to enjoy. And if you’re not in to watching other squads play on the pitch, McDonald’s thinks you’ll get a kick out of the new augmented reality (AR) game you can play with their french fry boxes.
The slick fry boxes work kind of like Nintendo’s AR cards do for the 3DS. Position the box where you want to play — a coffee table at home or your desk at work, for example — and fire up the McDonald’s GOL! app. It’s only available for Android and iOS (sorry, Windows Phone users).
Once you’ve scanned the fry box, GOL! will render the rest of the scene. The goal appears in front of the box, and the object is, obviously, to score on it.
Other objects you place in the scene will be converted into in-game objects too. That enables you to pull off tricky bank shots and score bigger points. There’s a global leaderboard, too, so that you can show the world how amazingly good you are at the game. Think of it as a high-tech take on good old-fashioned paper football, but with a whole lot more people to brag to than the guys at the lunch table.
McDonald’s says they’ve produced 1.5 billion of the World Cup fry boxes, and the company says the promotion is all about “bringing fun, innovative programming to our customers and celebrating our shared love of futbol.”
Pretty cool stuff, and at the very least it provides a few more minutes of enjoyment after you’ve poliched off your last fry.
