Participating in Secret Santa is often times an anxiety-inducing, nerve-racking endeavor. You rarely get matched up with someone you know well enough to buy the perfect-but-affordable gift, and you don’t want to seem ungrateful when your Secret Santa ends up buying you a last-minute cupcake and magazine from the stand downstairs in return. However, the tradition must become much more exciting when one of the world’s richest, most famous, and most charitable people ends up being your secret gift-giver. Bill Gates participated in Reddit’s Secret Santa this year, and one lucky Redditor landed him as the stealthy jolly man in red.
Reddit user NY1227 — named Rachel — participated in the exchange, and received a package that said “to Rachel from Bill.” Of course, Rachel didn’t think it was any specific Bill at first. She opened up the box, which contained a cow plushie, and the book*Journeys of a Lifetime. The card included with the box informed her that the stuffed cow was representative of a donation to Heifer International, a charity that donates a cow to a family in need. The card was signed by Bill Gates himself, and included in the package was a picture of Gates holding both the stuffed animal and the signed card.
The book gifted to Rachel wasn’t just a random book Gates thought a stranger might like; Rachel included travel as a major goal of her life on her wish list.
Gates also wrote her a personal message in the book, but she did not reveal the specifics of it, a she wanted to keep a part of her gift for herself. Amusingly, in her recounting of the story, she apologizes for having Apple’s iPad on her wish list.
