Apple hasn’t made any notable updates to the iPod touch line of devices in nearly two years, but it has just quietly brought the smallest 16GB model up to snuff. Without any kind of announcement, Apple updated the 16GB touch with a camera, color options, and other features of its larger cousins. It’s now a proper 5th generation iPod touch, but is there anything new on the inside this new 5th gen media player?
The folks at iFixit picked up a new 16GB iPod touch and promptly broke into it hoping to find it full of Apple’s secrets. However, it’s almost identical to the 32GB and 64GB versions. On the back of the device, Apple now includes the wrist strap peg and a 5MP camera, both of which were available on the larger variants previously. The board, camera connections, and opening procedure are the same in this device as all the other 5th gen iPods.

The only notable difference in this device is a change in the way Apple connects the headphone jack. It’s not taped to the board anymore, making it a little easier to pry out if it ever needs to be replaced. Although, at that point you’ve had to rip the case open, which is not easy with an iPod touch. iFixit gave this device the same 3 out of 10 score for repairability. No surprise there.
The updated 16GB iPod touch also comes with a newly reduced price — just $199 ($30 less than before). The other sizes are getting a price drop, too. The 32GB is $50 cheaper at $249, and the 64GB is $299 ($100 off the old price). This is probably a recognition of the continued slide in iPod sales as more people shift to smartphones as their preferred mobile entertainment device.
