Even though the company was purchased by Facebook and the internet subsequently disavowed the years of goodwill it dumped all over the Oculus Rift, the virtual reality helmet is still being used for a wide variety of applications. From piloting a drone*to becoming a bird, the Rift is used for much more than just giving people a more immersive gaming experience. In fact, one of the most amusing uses of the Oculus Rift was also its most boring — giving customers a virtual tour of a supermarket*that they can just drive down the street to visit for real. Now, the Rift is being used in another hilariously boring way: sitting in a chair and playing Game Boy.
Yes, a virtual reality Game Boy is, essentially, a Virtual Boy by name. However, this Rift demo, created by coder Shane O’Brien, is arguably more useful.
Though this is something you can do in real life if you just go into your drawer and grab your old Game Boy, it wouldn’t be nearly as funny as strapping on a $300 virtual reality headset, sitting in the same chair you would to play Game Boy, and using a custom Rift mod to play a virtual version of one.
So far, just about everything works fine, but there is an occasional issue where the audio doesn’t properly sync. The above video showcases a game of*Tetris — complete with the original music and sound effects that bring back memories of playing hours of the game while sitting in the backseat of a family car trip across the country. Toward the end of the video, O’Brien switches from*Tetris to*Pokémon, so the demo isn’t just limited to one game. In fact, the demo is only limited to whatever ROMs are compatible with this Game Boy emulator.
For more info, or if you want to try the rig yourself, head on over to O’Brien’s GitHub page.
