This year’s wave of television pilots produced by Amazon Studios has just arrived on their website. Unlike last year’s offerings, half of the pilots this year are geared towards younger viewers.
Last year Amazon decided to match offerings from Netflix and Hulu by releasing their own television shows that could only be watched on their Instant Video service. Unlike Hulu and Netflix, Amazon decided that the best option would be to release a series of pilots and let the users vote on which ones would become shows. Now the season one for last year’s shows have been released Amazon has fired up the voting system again for an entirely new wave of shows.

If you watched the pilots for Amazon’s shows last year, you know that they focused mostly on adult content. The shows ranged from a television spin-off of Zombieland to political comedy and even a nerd focused show or two. There was something for everyone, as long as you didn’t mind the incredibly liberal use of every swear word imaginable. The adult options for this year come from similar genres, but there’s a lot less of them. This year’s offerings have been split in half, where five of the shows are adult focused and five are aimed at kids. These shows range from educational to comedy, both animated and not.
Even if none of the kids shows are voted on to become shows, Amazon is clearly paying attention to what the competition is doing. Netflix is routinely lauded as being the best family option because of the volume of kids shows that are available on its service, but none of it is original content. Amazon can compete with Netflix in acquiring shows that are on television to stream, but by creating original content they are offering something that is entirely unique to their service for kids. Since Amazon Instant Video is coupled with Amazon Prime, it adds unique value to their service.
